The designation which he received as a child became his " secret name " when he received a new one at initiation, and this again often gave way to some name bestowed by his contem- poraries from some personal peculiarity. This last name was usually compounded of two words, one of which, " Bunjil," is a constant, and may be freely rendered " elder," the other describing some quality or peculiarity.
