ged that he was to let himself out of the window by the rope he had used to let himself down the hole, if no better means of exit were available, when his job was done. His job! Great heavens, what a job! He did not realize the horror of it until it was too late. When the revels of the day were over--when night came, and that voiceless solitude, filled with spirits of the dead--his nerve failed him. Trying to fasten a rope to an iron ring just within the mouth of the well, evidently put there on purpose to fasten ropes to--hurrying to get the thing over and done with as quickly as possible--he fumbled and bungled, and it slipped.
