In post-Cretaceous times the weathering away of the hard, surface rock, ac- companied by a pluvial period, transformed this central part of the continent into a rich lacustrine area, covered with luxuriant vegetation and inhabited by giant birds and marsupials, now extinct, with crocodiles, chelonians and fishes now only found in the northern tropical parts of Australia. Later on, a period of desiccation supervened which has persisted to the present day, its most extreme effects being seen in the country.
