ongst the Orunchas there are some who are not altogether malevolent, but are supposed to be especially concerned with the making of medicine men. In the Kaitish, Arunta, Unmatjera, and Ilpirra tribes, if a man feels that he has received a call to the medical profession, he betakes himself to some secluded spot, known to be frequented by one of these special spirit individuals ; or perhaps, without intending to do so, he may come across one in some lonely part of the scrub. In the Arunta tribe three distinct schools of medicine men are recognised (i) those made by the Iruntarinia or spirits, (2) those made by the Oruncha, who are.
