These mitji- mitjari are made of stone, and in the same way we find stone Churinga associated with the white ant and the sugar- bag totems. In the case of the latter, however, they were VIII CHURINGA AND ALLIED OBJECTS 275 not associated with spirits but represented the actual sugar bag itself, just as in the Arunta tribe we meet with churinga imchima and churinga uchaqua^ which represent various stages in the development of the witchetty grub.
