hose of the Larakia, reaching a length of two and a half feet, and 214 NATIVE TRIBES OF NORTHERN AUSTRALIA chap. are carried by messengers, who go out to summon members of distant groups to take part in sacred cere- monies (Plate II). They are made from the wood of the india-rubber tree, and the women and children think the sound they make is the voice of a spirit called ngagurnguruk. They are preserved in certain sacred spots which are very suggestive, in one important respect, of the ertnatulunga of the Arunta.
